The Pills Do Not Remind You To Eat

I am now
and will always be
fascinated
by the expulsions
of my body
the grease sheen of a bag
of unflavoured potato chips
the amazing sunset amethyst
of an erupting bottle of merlot

The pills do not remind you to eat
though they do their damndest
to remind you
to be human
there is something to all of this
choking down ice cream
a home made cookie cake
something resembling a smile
to put your wife
and your children
at ease

The pills do not remind you to eat
but they hold memories
something resembling what it was like
to be a child
before you learned shame
how to shun
the limelight
or the teachers affections

The pills do not remind you to eat
but they can remind you to breathe
when you are soaking in a hot
flop
sweat
and the eyes of the classroom are upon you
as though you can spit some kind of truth
any kind of truth
that they have never heard before
You play off your insecurites by offering them extra credit
SHOW ME WHAT I GOT WRONG AND BE REWARDED
for all that 1% will do them

The pills
do not
remind you
to eat

They remind you
that you
exist
